Shepherd's Purse
Because it is able to germinate and grow right through the year, Shepherd's purse's distinctive 10-15cm wide rosette shape is often noticed in winter when there is least competition. It is a small annual, common right accross NZ.
Its long lasting seeds has been seen to last decades in the soil. It can go through multiple generations in a single year.
Until its small white flowers, up to 25cm tall develop, it is often confused with hawksbeard, bitter cress, or Cape Weed. Its heart-shaped pods are also a giveaway.
Difficult to control in forrage brassicas, pre-emergence spraying is recommended.
